Mount Washington and the Saco River Aaron Draper Shattuck painted Mount Washington many times, from a variety of vantage points. A native of Francestown, New Hampshire, Shattuck demonstrated his love of the White Mountains in more than eighty catalogued paintings done during an eleven-year period from 1854 to 1864. The White Mountains were a popular tourist destination and, in a sense, Shattuck was a tourist among tourists, but with a greater sense of purpose. He was one of many artists who spent time in the area producing small works that captured the natural beauty of the area as souvenirs for summer visitors. Rich and precise in its detail, his work emphasized the picturesque qualities of vistas that were easily accessible to vacationers at the popular summer resorts in the region. |
