1835–40 Trained and employed as a lithographer with Thomas Moore (successor to Pendleton) in Boston

1838 First sketching trip to the White Mountains

1841–46 Traveled in Europe; studied in Paris with Boudin and John Vanderlyn

1842 Works first exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum

1844 Exhibited at the Paris Salon; favorably reviewed

1847–48 Traveled in Europe, sketching in the Rhine Valley

1848–57 Exhibited Panorama of the Rhine in American cities

1850 First exhibited at the National Academy of Design

1853 Purchased a house in North Conway, New Hampshire

1855 A founder and first president of the Boston Art Club

1863 Exhibited at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts

1865–66 Traveled in Europe; visited Pont-Aven, Brittany

1874 Purchased a house in Woburn, Massachusetts

1876 Exhibited at U.S. Centennial Exhibition, Philadelphia

1900 Published memoirs

1907 Died in Woburn, Massachusetts
