Mount Washington from Sunset Hill

Mount Washington from Sunset Hill
Mount Washington from Sunset Hill

North Conway is one of the most charming places in the world to me....The valley is broad, the mountains are high, but not too high or near to shut out the sunlight.
--B  Champney, 1900
Signed and dated lower right: B Champney 1858.

12 x 18 Lent anonymously

Champney first sketched this scene on his walking trip through the White Mountains with Kensett in 1850. Prints were soon produced of both artists' interpretations of this view, Kensett's presented by the American Art Union in 1851 and Champney's published by George P. Bond in 1853. As a result, the view from Sunset Hill became one of the best-known and most often painted images of the White Mountains. In 1853 the newly married Ben and Carrie Champney purchased the connected farm buildings seen near the bottom of the hill as a summer home.
